using back up on xp
I am trying to run a back up onto a blank dvd, however it wont let me back
up to my cd drive 'e' for some reason. I have tried to back up to desktop
and then send to cd drive 'e' but i get a message up saying 'windows
encountered a problem when trying to copy this file'
Any help appreciated ,thankyou.

With what program are you trying to "run a back up"? If you are using
the built-in NTBackup, you can't burn directly to disk. NTBackup is a
very old backup program originally used in NT with tape drives. If you
are using NTBackup, you may wish to use a newer, more capable program
that can do what you want. Acronis True Image is very good and can also
image drives and partitions. For an inexpensive but powerful backup
program, you can also look at Second Copy from www.centered.com.
If this answer isn't applicable to your case, then please post back with
what backup program you're using and more details about what you're doing.

Perhaps it's too big for the DVD? DVDs are pretty small compared to hard
drives.
Also, x-posting to so many groups isn't going to help much; you have to
learn to target better.
f'ups set to .general for this arm of the thread.

[Excessive crossposting removed]
Are you talking about the backup program that comes with XP, ntbackup? If
so it cannot backup to DVD. It can backup to a single CD but only if if 3rd
party packet writing software is installed, and even then it will only write
to a single CD, it can't span CD's. One option is to create the backup
file, then afterwards burn that file to CD, or use a different backup
solution. There are much better programs out there.
If you're using a different backup program then you should check with the
tech support for that program.
By the way you don't need to crosspost to all those newsgroups.
Crossposting to one or two groups - when needed -is ok, but for this kind of
simple question there is no need to cross post at all.
