Default Protection Fault on Reboot Sometimes

When I turn on my computer I'm getting several protection fault alerts
and being told to restart computer.
I then turn the computer off for a few minutes and when I turn it back
on, I get into Windows98 and my desktop with no problem.
I feel something's lurking ready to cause more problems here. Can
someone give advice on how to figure out what it is and how to fix it?
    Thanks.

Have you closed running programs and performed a Scandisk followed by a
    Defrag?

Just a thought. It's possible the drives are not up to speed by the time
they are needed. Look in the bios and see if you can lengthen out the boot
time. That might let them spool up in time.

Are you using AVG 7.0 free antivirus? Ever since updating yesterday,
it has taken several boots to get to a working windows. I get OE
exceptions at VXD___ and then the 3rd one came up with AVG core as the
problem. I have reinstalled AVG, but have not tried a reboot yet.
Also pulled cards, memory, cleaned fans, new filter, voltages look
good. Have not had a chance to do logged boot.

Yes, I am using AVG. I have run scandisk (several times) and defragged.
When I ran a virus scan (via avg)it stopped midway. I tried to run it
again today and it showed no viruses. As for the respooling reply, I
have no idea how to proceed on what you suggested. Can you please be
    more specific? Thx.

Maybe you should turn off AVG automatic bootup scanning for the time
being. I had that same problem today.

I do not have that on, I do the check manually. I have uninstalled AVG
and will see what happens when the computer boots up cold. I had one
good boot up since the uninstall, but the machine was not off for a
very long time so I am reserving judgement.

Another problem free boot 5 hours later, looking like my diagnosis was
right on. I was lucky to have one of the many blue screens come up
with a reference to AVGCORE. I also did a fair amount of other
maintenance that day. I might reinstall AVG and wait until there is
another new update, but will have to find something else if this starts
    up again.

The AVG update Saturday solved the problem on my computer. No problems
at all booting up this a.m.
