    Default I hate Compaq!

Here's the story: Compaq with dead HD. R/R and got out the Compaq "Recovery
CD". Guess what? Compaq used a 'save' partition to keep the setup/restore
files on...they're not *ON* the CD. What good is that? So I contacted
HP/Compaq. This older presario ran W98, and HP will not provide the "Quick
Restore" CD's they used to make since their agreement with MS to provide W98
    has expired.

This is a Presario model "5000". If anyone has the Quick Restore CD and can
rip an image file that would really be cool! If not,
I can of course put on a 'plain vanilla' install of Windows, download
drivers, all that, but the customer has lost the custom software (phone
answering system, etc.) that came with the system.

Don't think I can help you with that CD, but I'll check. What I love is
when I get an HP in with a screwed up hard drive and check the HP site
for replacement OS disk, rather than offer a replacement they simply
post "The files you need are already on your hard drive."

Sometimes the disks are available - for a charge. I'd rather eat
gangle's shorts than send them money for what they should have supplied
    in the first place.

If you expected that, then you was deceived into thinking you were
dealing with a company that gave a shit.

My son has the same problem. Why the heck Compaq calls it a recovery disk
is beyond me; it does not seem to have anything on it.

I agree - all it seems to be is a program to boot the PC and get you into
some programs on the 'recovery partition'. Well, the hard drive that came
with the computer is totally dead...what good is that disk when you can't
    get into the HD? D'oh!

How about a nice generic one that already is spam infested <g>

take out the spaces, and correct the obvious:

    i n f o (at) t u r n c r a f t (dot) c o m

If you include the word "Compaq" in the subject line, it won't be filterd
    out. Thanks!

Dead-dead. As in platter motor not turning. Not the kind of thing I can fix
<g>! And there isn't 'critical' data on it so it's not worth paying a data
recovery company to work on it. I just want to get it set back up for the
    guy.

    Tim,

I have a Compaq computer. Control panel/systems says it is
    X 86 family 6 model 8 stepping 3 (whatever that means).

I have the CD and of course, all the installed stuff on my hard drive.

If this is of use to you ... and you can tell me what to do to get you
the image file you need, I'd be happy to help.

The recovery(not to be confused with restore) cd launches the powerquest
program, which then restores from the harddrive.

True. I've been reading the docs that came with the computer, and it can do
'user' backups as well. Nice touch...if the hard drive doesn't die. Which
this one did. Poof! No spin, no data, no recovery. Bummer...
