Acts Like I have a virus
My system acts as if I have a virus. I have run a virus scan using
both Norton and Panda. I have Norton 2005 installed and it showed nothing
and neither did Panda. I have run Adaware and spybot to see if there was
anything. I am also using Zone Alarm Pro.
I will be online, or maybe using the explorer to check files or what
ever and all the sudden I loose control of the system. The mouse goes wild
and windows open and close. The taskbar appears on the side and on the
bottom too. Icon of the desk top become highlighted. I have to reboot.
Sometimes the system will go for a full day without anything
happening, other times it happens shortly after I boot up.
Do I have a virus or what? Is the problem heat? A bad power
supply, memory?
I also have only 54% resources after I boot. I have used msconfig
and I am loading only what is necessary, virus san, Zonealarm, K6 utilities
teatimer, rain and the such.
Help!

Try disabling Norton at boot and the others you mention except Zone
Alarm, load that. Run Norton manually after Windows loads if you
feel it's needed. If that solves the problem enable them again one
at a time to find the culprit.

Re: Acts Like I have a virus
rebooted. did not let Norton load. Still had the problem. rebooted. did
not let ZoneAlarm and Norton load, seemed to work alright, of course I had
to have DSL disconnected.
When ZoneAlarm and Norton are not running I have 73% resources. When I have
ZoneAlarm running it drops to 53%. When I have ZoneAlarm and Norton running
it is down to 46%.

Re: Acts Like I have a virus
I would try over-installing Zone Alarm then try it without Norton
loading. You should not lose any ZA settings. If ok try adding
Norton if you feel you need it to load at boot.
BTW, I load ZA 5.5 at boot and resources are 76% free. Right now
with Agent also running I have 73%. I don't usually worry about it
because resources are meant to be used. I don't believe the
resource amounts you state are your problem. Letting Windows manage
the swap file with no maximum is generally a good idea.

Re: Acts Like I have a virus
Didn't work. to prevent the system from going crazy, I have to close
ZoneAlarm and Norton Virus Scan 2005.
I did a fresh install of Zone Alarm. I still have only 54% free resources
to dun Windows. My free memory can be as much as 98 out of 160 Megs I have
on the machine.

The swap file gets used by some programs regardless of the amount
of memory available, yours may be corrupted. I assume you have run
Scandisk after the problem occurs so you might delete the swap file
and let Windows re-create it. May have something to do with the
resources.
If it's in the Windows folder boot to the Dos Command Prompt Only
and from the C:\ prompt enter:
del c:\windows\win386.swp.
I just did it to make sure it worked and it did.
Also a memory stick may need re-seating, it could be an
intermittent problem.

Re: Acts Like I have a virus
I think it worked. I haven't seen the problem today. I will watch to see
if it comes back.
