    Default problem with sata drive

I have a dell xps with a sata hard drive. I took the drive out and put it in another machine and was able to reformat the drive. When I put the drive back in the xps, it would not recognize the drive. I have unplugged all the other drives (cd,dvd, floppy) but still no dice. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi
are you saying that XP can't find your drive during installation ?

I don't get the chance to boot into xp. After the first dell splash screen I get a black screen telling me the machine cannot see any drives. I hit F1 to continue and get a blue screen -"problem detected windows has been shut down, check for viruses , remove newly installed hd or hd controllers, run chkdsk and restart" stop : 0x0000007b

    Default original problem

Originally, a program was installed that needed updating, when I went to install the newer version I discovered that the admin didn't have access to the registry keys created by the first program. I took ownership of the keys and then the OS quit. The machine (xps) would boot and load the profiles, but it didn't recognize any programs ( not notepad, cmd, regedit ). I decided to reformat the machine. After I booted from the cd, it would scan the hardware config and then a message showed up saying that it couldn't recognize any hard drive. I took the hd out and put it in another machine (dell 8400). This machine saw the drive so I reformatted it. When I put the drive back in the xps, I got the same message - no drive found. I unplugged all other drives (cd,dvd, floppy) , still no dice.

you may need the SATA controller drivers:

when you Boot with the XP cd and start the Setup, you are asked of "third party" or "third party" drivers you need to press the required key (F6 if i remember) and give setup the required floppy containing your SATA controller drivers (they comes bundled in a CD or a Floppy with your motherboard / computer package )
